About this event
Join senior church leaders from across British and Irish denominations as we gather in prayer and reflection for the people of Afghanistan and Haiti.
We’ll be meeting on Afghan Independence Day (19 August) as the country faces a brutal and uncertain future. Christian Aid has been working in Afghanistan for 30 years, responding to the urgent humanitarian need there, supporting civil society and working to protect the rights of women and girls, as well as minority groups.
In Haiti, where Christian Aid is also responding, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit on Saturday, killing hundreds of people and damaging churches, homes and infrastructure. The country is in a perilous state as the triple threats of humanitarian disaster, political unrest and hunger combine and the most vulnerable are particularly affected.
In this desperate time, we can feel powerless. But we believe in the power of prayer. So join senior church leaders as we lament and raise our voices in hope for affected communities in Afghanistan and Haiti as they face loss of life, livelihoods and an anxious future.
Prayers will be led by:
The Rt Revd Dr David Walker, Bishop of Manchester
Archbishop Angaelos, Coptic Orthodox Church
Dr Krish Kandiah
Ramani Leathard, head of Asia region & Afghanistan, Christian Aid
Rev Dr Liz Hughes, Convenor of the Council for Global Mission for the Presbyterian Church in Ireland
The Very Reverend Susan Brown, minister at Dornoch Cathedral, a former Moderator of the Church of Scotland’s General Assembly, and current Convener of the Faith Impact Forum
Come and pray with us for the people of Afghanistan and the people of Haiti.
